The districts of Bangladesh are divided into sub-districts called Upazila Parishad (UZP) or Thana (Bengali উপজেলা upojela). Upazilas are similar to the subdivisions of provinces, which in some western countries.
Bangladesh, currently has 500 upazilas and 509 administrative thanas. The upazilas are the lowest level of the second regional government in Bangladesh. The administrative structure consists, in fact, in the divisions (7), Districts (64), Upazila / Thana and Union Parishads (UP). This system of decentralization was introduced by former military ruler and president of Bangladesh, Lieutenant-General Hossain Mohammad Ershad, in an attempt to strengthen the local government. Under UP, villages (gram) and Pará exist, but they have no administrative power and the elected members. The Local Government Ordinance of 1982 was a year later amended, re-designate and improve existing thanas as upazilas.
